The Search for New Spirit-old
Description
The primary aim of this project is to establish a new community network by revitalising abandoned and disintegrated churches scattered throughout the Czech Republic. The project has an urban objective of creating a shared architectural language for all abandoned religious buildings, which will facilitate the creation of a network that instils sense of belonging in community.
The project involves restoring these religious ruins to make them safe and provide educational insight into the past architectural style. Once renovated, these spaces will serve the community in various ways, providing a versatile interior that can accommodate multiple functions with the goal of building a sense of community and self-awareness.
Impact
The project is expected to have a significant impact on the revitalization and preservation of abandoned religious buildings, as well as on the economic and social development of each region. Currently, there are over 250 abandoned religious buildings, with more than 20 churches in critical condition. Additionally, between 2005 and 2017, over 80,000 people relocated from villages to cities, leaving many rural areas with dwindling populations. In fact, 500 villages have fewer than 100 residents.
Upon the successful completion of the project, it is anticipated that over 250 religious buildings will be saved and maintained for future generations to appreciate. This transformative initiative is projected to generate up to 30,000 jobs connected to the revitalized areas (maintenance, hospitality, etc.), attracting 1.5 million tourists who will contribute 7 billion to the local economy. As a result of these improvements and increased opportunities, it is expected that 12,500 people will relocate back to the villages, breathing new life into these once struggling communities. These numbers were calculated based on the study of the impact of revitalization on the community in Neratov. For more exact numbers, the potential of each location would have to be calculated.
In summary, the project is set to not only preserve and revitalize the region\\\’s cultural heritage but also foster economic growth and encourage a resurgence of population in rural areas. The revitalization of these religious buildings is expected to have far-reaching positive effects on both the communities and the broader region, ensuring a sustainable future for all.
